What Are Compression Socks

Compression socks are not just any ordinary gear for hikers. They are essential when it comes to keeping their performance at its optimal level while minimizing the risk of injuries. By providing support to the muscles in your legs, compression socks can help reduce fatigue. They also contribute to protecting you against cramps and common problems that hikers face while on the trail.

Additionally, compression socks help improve circulation. Which is an important factor for muscle recovery and reduces swelling in the feet and lower legs. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just starting with this exhilarating outdoor activity, compression socks should definitely be part of your gear list. Furthermore, they’re a great addition to your first-aid kit as they help reduce swelling after an injury or surgery. Get ready to explore the wilderness like never before with the support and protection that compression socks provide!

How Compression Socks Work

Compression socks work by providing gentle pressure to your lower legs. This will help reduce swelling, improve circulation, and promote healthy blood flow. Here are some key reasons why hikers should wear compression socks.
Reasons Include:
1. Improve muscle performance – Compression socks help reduce fatigue in your muscles by improving circulation which can increase stamina for extended periods of hiking.
2. Reduce swelling – The gentle pressure provided by compression socks helps alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with swollen feet and ankles that can occur after a long day of walking.
3. Support your feet & ankles – By providing gentle support to your feet and ankles, compression socks help reduce strain on your joints while you’re out on the trail. This can help prevent injury and keep you feeling comfortable all day long.
4. Prevent blisters – Compression socks provide an extra layer of cushioning that helps protect against painful blisters caused by friction when walking for long distances.
5. Improve recovery time – By increasing circulation, compression socks can help speed up recovery time between hikes, so you can hit the trail again sooner!

Regular Socks Versus Compression Socks

Regular socks are usually made of cotton or synthetic materials and provide a basic cushion between the foot and the shoe. These socks don’t do much more than provide a cushion, however, which can lead to friction and blisters during long treks. Compression socks, on the other hand, are designed to give extra support to your ankles and feet over time. They are typically made of breathable fabric and have extra padding in certain areas like around the toes. The compression from these socks can help reduce swelling while also providing stability and support with each step you take. Compression socks can also help reduce fatigue in your feet as you hike by improving circulation. By wearing compression socks while hiking, you can help prevent injuries, improve comfort, and ensure that your feet stay supported throughout your entire hike.

How To Choose A Good Pair Of Compression Socks

Compression socks come in different level of compression pressure ratings also known as mmHg. A lower mmHg number the lower the compression.

The ratings are as follows:
8-15 mmHg are mild compression for everyday wear
15-20 mmHg are medium which are generally used for sports such as hiking
20-50 mmHg are medical class compression socks, you know, the ones that your grandma wears!

Similar to traditional socks, compression socks come in a variety of heights. The shorter styles, like low-cut or no-show socks, are perfect for everyday wear. However, if you’re hitting the hiking trails, you can opt for knee-high socks for optimal comfort and support.

When choosing your perfect sock we always recommend socks that are 15-20 mmHg and then the height you are most comfortable wearing. Me, personally, I prefer no show or ankle socks even on long hikes. Alex on the other hand usually wears knee high or mid calf hiking socks and swears they are the right socks for everyone.

Best No Show Compression Socks For Hiking

My second favorite type of socks are the no-show socks. Because I am typically barefoot or in sandals I generally do not like my feet to feel too constricted. No show socks are the perfect addition to your hiking gear. They often provide much-needed comfort and support when traversing rocky or uneven terrain.

The light, breathable material of no show socks will ensure your feet don’t overheat during long hikes in warmer weather. Not only do no-show compression socks provide practical advantages, but they also come in a variety of colors and styles! This will help you can look stylish while tackling trails. The one downside to the no-show socks. Because of how low they sit you can get some dirt and debris from the trail in the rim of the sock which can cause some irritation if you do not remove it. With the added confidence of knowing you’ve got the right gear, you’ll be ready to take on any hike life throws your way.

Some Info On Plantar Fasciitis And Hikers

Not sure what the medical conditions plantar fasciitis is or why you should care? There was a time I didn’t know what is was either. Plantar fasciitis is a common, painful foot condition. It involves inflammation of the thick band of tissue, called the plantar fascia. It runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes. Symptoms generally include sharp pain in the heel or arch area of the foot when walking. The pain is often worse in the morning due to tightness overnight, but can become more intense after long periods of standing or exercise such as hiking. Treatment for plantar fasciitis includes rest, icing, stretching exercises, and physical therapy. In some cases, custom orthotics may be recommended to support the arch and prevent further injury.

Compression socks are an effective way to help manage plantar fasciitis, a condition caused by inflammation of the tissue that connects your heel bone to your toes. Compression socks can help reduce pain and swelling in the feet by applying pressure evenly across the foot and leg, which reduces the tension on the inflamed area. Additionally, compression socks provide extra support for arching and stretching activities that may otherwise be painful. This makes them ideal for individuals who experience pain when engaging in physical activities such as hiking or running. By helping to prevent further injury, compression socks can also aid in recovery from plantar fasciitis.

If you are experiencing pain that is more than just being a little sore please seek medical advice! Especially as a beginner hiker you might not be sure how much your body can handle so it is always good to talk to your doctor about what you are up to.
